  • What Are The Building Regulations for Handrails & Banister Railings?

The UK law mandates that banisters and handrails must be built to fit a certain criteria. In all buildings, handrails must be installed at a height of between 900mm and 1000mm, measured from the pitch line to the top of the handrail. A secondary safety handrail can be installed at 600mm if desired, or required. Other building regulations include the fact that all handrails and banisters must be a different colour to the surrounding stairs or walls, making them clearly visible. They must also be made of a material that individuals can easily grasp, and they must be slip-resistant. Another important factor is that you must not have a gap of more than 100mm situated between spindles or balusters of a banister, or between any gaps in a handrail. This is to increase safety for children.
  • Is It a Legal Requirement to Have a Handrail on Stairs?

It is a legal requirement to have a handrail on at least one side of a stairway of more than 2 consecutive steps, no matter what size. If the stairway has a width of less than one metre, only one handrail is necessary. Stairs with a width of over one metre must have a handrail installed on both sides. If there is an open drop exceeding 600mm in height, a banister is required.
  • Are Handrails Required on Both Sides of Exterior Stairs?

The building code maintains that if your outdoor stairs have fewer than two ‘risers’, a handrail is not mandatory. Your exterior stairs do therefore require a handrail when there are two or more steps. If your steps are leading up to a deck which exceeds a height of 30 inches from the ground, it is also required to have guardrails. It is only mandatory to have a handrail on both sides of exterior stairs if the width of the stairs is over one metre.
  • Do All of your Loft Ladders Come With Handrails?

A number of our loft ladders do come with handrails fitted, with some giving you the option to fit extra handrails for added safety, but some don’t. For example, some of our fixed loft ladders don’t come with handrails as standard. These have to be added as an optional extra. If you’re unsure, just check the product description and this will tell you what will come on the day. We also sell a range of loft ladder accessories including handrails.
