There are lots of good reasons why it’s essential to draught-proof your loft hatch. Here we examine why it’s a good idea and what you can do to ensure that yours is draught-free!

Draught-Proofing your Loft Hatch - Why Bother?

Lower Energy Bills

By draught-proofing your loft hatch, you can help to make your home more energy efficient. If you constantly have to put up with a cold draught coming through your ceiling, particularly in the winter, you’ll no doubt be tempted to crank up your heating. This could lead to much higher energy bills. So draught-proofing your loft hatch could save you money.

Better for the Environment

If you don’t use as much energy in your home, you are naturally lowering your carbon footprint as well. Less heating means using less energy, so you can do your bit for the environment by draught-proofing your loft too.

Increased Comfort

Draught-proofing your loft hatch will ensure that your home stays cosy and comfortable year-round. It’s a quick and easy job to get done and can help keep you and your family safe and warm. So let’s discover how to draught-proof your loft hatch today!

How to Draught-proof Your Loft Hatch, The Next Steps:

There are different types of loft hatches in every home. So you’ll need to consider what kind of insulation is the best for you.

It’s important to distinguish between draught-proofing and insulating your loft hatch as these are not the same thing. Insulating a loft hatch provides additional material to prevent heat from escaping from the loft hatch. Examples of insulation might be blanket insulation or loose-fill insulation. Find our full guide on how to insulate your loft hatch here.

Draught-proofing won’t prevent heat loss in the same way that insulation will, but it will stop cold air from passing through the gaps and into the space below. Find out how to draught-proof different types of loft hatches below.

For Flat Loft Hatches

If you have a flat loft hatch, the easiest way to insulation is to use self-adhesive foam tape and stick this onto the surface of the frame facing up into the loft space. The tape has a sticky, peel-off back and can stick directly to the edges of the loft hatch. The hatch itself will rest on top of the tape, creating a seal that will not allow air to pass.

For Hinged Loft Hatches

A hinged loft hatch will also benefit from self-adhesive foam tape. However, in this instance, you need to apply the tape facing downwards into the living space below. The hatch will then press up against the tape when it is closed and create the necessary seal to prevent the draughts from passing through. Some hinged loft hatches don’t rest exactly against the loft frame. If this is the case with yours, you’ll have to apply the tape to the frame and the hatch so that the two strips meet when the loft hatch is closed. In this instance, the seal is created when the two pieces of tape meet one another.
