3 Tips for Keeping Your Attic Conversion Cool in The Summer
Summer is finally upon us, and while that means family barbecues, trips to the seaside and plenty of other lovely things to do in the sunshine, it also means the temperature in your attic conversion will also be on the rise.
Attics can get very hot and damp in the summer, not only is this uncomfortable, its also very bad for the structural condition of your house. Taking the time to keep your attic cool and properly ventilated wont just result in a more comfortable living space, it will also save on costly repairs in the long run. So with that being said, heres 3 tips on how to keep you attic cool during the hotter months:
Light coloured roof tiles
Lighter coloured roof tiles can be a very effective way of keeping your attic cool, especially if your roof catches a great deal of sun during the day when the sun is at its hottest. Where darker tiles absorb the suns rays more, lighter coloured tiles reflect heat in the form of light and reduce the temperature of your roof - which in turn leads to a cooler attic.
Powered attic fans
A powered attic ventilator, or fan, draws in the cool air that is ready to escape through the roof and keeps it circulated in the attic, thereby reducing the temperature. Of course, powered attic fans can be expensive, ranging between £120 to £300 and upwards. Just by keeping a regular electric fan running in your vacant attic during the hottest times of the day can help prevent a build up of humidity.
Radiant barrier installation
Also called reflect foil radiant, this very simple insulation material works in a similar fashion to standard insulation, in that it prevents air from escaping through the roof. Its nothing more than coating really, but very effective at stopping cool air leaving via the roof.
