Did you have March 20th circled-in on your calendar? Unless it was somebody’s birthday, probably not. In case you didn’t already know, this date marks the official start of spring - at 10:45 PM GMT to be precise - and that can only mean one thing; it’s time for a good old-fashioned Spring Clean in the attic.

Whether you’re a regular loft-user or only make use of it now and again, it’s almost certainly in need of a thorough tidying since the last time you did it properly, so what better time to give it the good once-over and freshen things up a little. That’s why we’ve put together a few Spring Clean tips to get your loft nice and clean for the summer, from cluttered storage spaces to bedroom and bathroom conversions.

Bathroom Boosters

If you’re lucky enough to have an extra bathroom or ensuite in your loft, then you’ll know how good it feels to have a clean and tidy sanctuary where you can soak your troubles away. Making sure it’s absolutely spotless will definitely help you to relax the next time you’re in the tub.

1. Sparkling shower doors -  Rubbing a teaspoon of lemon oil on glass shower doors once or twice a year causes water to bead up and roll off, preventing watermarks and dirty-looking streaks. You can also use car-care products used to keep rainwater off your windscreen.

2. Don’t use acids on tiles - Some people will tell you to buff up your bathroom tiles with lemon or vinegar, this is an old wives’ tale and can actually do more harm than good, eating away at the tile grout over time. Use a microfibre mop instead to get those tiles gleaming once you’ve washed them properly with cleaning solution.

3. Flawless faucets - Bathroom faucets can be a pain to get clean, over time they get grimy and this can be stubborn to shift. A mix of white vinegar and water is sure to remove ugly water spots and smudges, leaving you with flawless faucets.

Bringing it to The Bedroom

If there’s one place you want to spend extra attention to when Spring Cleaning, it’s the bedroom. We spend so much time in there, we want it to feel relaxing and restful - especially when you’ve got guests staying over!

4. Freshen your wardrobe - Over time the inside of your wardrobes can start to smell musty and stale. A small yoghurt pot filled with bicarbonate of soda discreetly placed at the back of your wardrobe will neutralise offensive odours and leave it fresher.

5. Lighten up your lights - You might not think it, but a little dust on your light fittings will make all the difference to their luminance. A few seconds with a microfibre cloth will leave them looking brighter and your converted bedroom more open and spacious.

Stripping Your Storage Space

If you’re only using your loft as storage space, or thinking of getting rid of some old clutter to create a proper place to store your belongings, then you may think you’re getting off lightly here. Guess again. Sorting through all your stuff and finding a way to stockpile everything more efficiently is a tough job.

6. Clear out and get out - If your loft is packed to the rafters with old possessions then you won’t be able to effectively sort through things until it’s properly cleared. Move everything out of the loft first, for which you’ll need a proper loft ladder, and this will help you to visualise how to best use the space available to you.

7. No room for sentiment - If you want to create room for a decent storage space then you need to be ruthless when it comes to deciding what to keep and what to throw away. We can’t make those choices for you, but just remember to ask yourself this simple question: if something is really so important to you, why keep it in a place you seldom visit?
