What is the Best Insulation for a Loft?

In this FAQ, we’ll discuss the options you have in terms of insulation and what the best insulation for a loft is.

Options for Loft Insulation

If your loft space is easy to access, and you want to install the insulation yourself, the best option you may want to consider is to use rolls of mineral wool insulation which can be rolled out between joists. An alternative to this, is warm loft insulation where insulation boards are fitted between and over the rafters, or insulation is sprayed between rafters.

This option is beneficial as it creates minimal or no thermal bridging, is breathable, can be retrofitted with ease, and remains an effective way to keep heat within the property. Spray insulation is also effective as it completely seals the space and gets into every small crack and corner.

How Thick Should Loft Insulation Be?

According to the Government, homeowners can cut their energy bills by up to 20% through proper insulation. If using glass wool insulation, the recommended thickness is 270 millimetres. If using rockwool, it’s 250 millimetres, and if you are using cellulose it’s 220 millimetres.

Is Loft Insulation Safe?

Fibreglass insulation can be unsafe if it is not handled with care. The fibres from the glass can be irritating to skin and eyes, breathing in the fibres can also cause breathing problems.  Wearing the right equipment when handling the insulation material is crucial. Spray insulation also must be used with care as it contains harmful toxins. This is why hiring a professional who will have the right tools and equipment to safely insulate the area is imperative.
