Common Problems that Beg the Question… Can I Convert my Loft?

There is no doubt that converting your loft brings more benefits to your home than just extra space. So why isn’t everyone doing it? Many people weigh up the common stumbling blocks and often don't want to spend the time trying to get over them. Before considering the thought “can I convert my loft?”, it’s important to know what could be possible roadblocks; here are five common problems and questions that may or may not arise.

Loft-Conversion Issues

1. Can I Convert my Loft with the Current Legal Restrictions?

Converting your loft doesn't generally require planning permission, but if you want to increase the volume of space significantly, then approval is required. However, under your Permitted Development Rights, it is possible to add a roof extension at the side or back of a detached or semi-detached house, of up to 50m³ in volume, without having to apply. For a terraced house, this figure is 40m³. You will need planning permission if you live in a conservation area or one of natural beauty. A listed building also will require special consent.

2. Do I have Enough Headroom?

The lack of headroom is often an issue with loft conversions and if standing room is one of the main problems that keeps you asking, ‘can I convert my loft into a habitable space?’ then you may want to consider purchasing the thinnest insulation materials to give you more space. The best place to locate your access ladder is in direct line with the roof ridge, where there is more height. If in doubt, then it's a good idea to consult loft conversion experts such as here at Loft Centre. We can advise about economical ways to make the most of your attic space and give advice on a huge variety of access ladders.

3. If I have a Header Tank in my Loft, Can I still Convert it?

Cold water and central heating header tanks may be located in a problematic area. When the house was built, especially if it is old, these tanks were placed in positions by plumbers who did not consider the possibility of a loft conversion at a later date. The water tank problem needs to be resolved by moving it or getting rid of it altogether and changing to an unvented plumbing system.

4. Can I Add a Bathroom to my Loft?

The allure of using the loft also comes with the dream of having a second or even a third bathroom in your home. This can make a difference to the value of the property but needs the correct plumbing. This would include putting in a waste drainage venting system, which will add extra expenditure. If it sounds like an impossible task, think again. The required piping and waste disposal system can be fitted by a professional, but shop around to get a price that suits your budget.

5. Is There Enough Space for Access?

A lot of landings do not seem to have the necessary space for an entrance staircase to your new living space. The door hatch may be also situated in a very awkward position. If this is the case, it makes good sense to buy some cleverly designed space saving loft stairs that will solve this problem. Space-saving loft stairs add many values to a home and whilst their primary use is to have a fixed staircase leading to the entrance of your loft, they can also enhance your interior decor and add a stylish, chic look to your home.
