Choosing the Right Loft Hatch Size for your Loft Space

Read our useful guide on choosing the right loft hatch size for your space

If you are looking to have a loft ladder installed or considering doing it yourself, one of the first things you need to do is establish is how much space you have for your loft hatch and what size loft hatch you can cater for.

The most common loft hatch size has a fitting size of 562mm x 726mm, along with a little extra for the overall frame. So if you are updating an existing loft hatch or enlarging one, the standard size is perfect for those who occasionally need to access the loft space as there is no need for a permanent loft ladder installation.

What to consider when choosing the right loft hatch size for your space

There are a few things to consider when choosing the right loft hatch size including, the location, what type of loft hatch you want and whether you want a fire regulated and insulated loft hatch.

How to choose the right loft hatch size for your loft space in 3 easy steps

1. Find the right location

If you are starting from the beginning, you'll need to establish a new location for your hatch and ladder. Or, if you're making adjustments to an existing loft hatch, either way, measuring still applies. When measuring for a loft hatch installation, always consider the following:

  • Ensure there are no obstructions like cables or pipes.
  • When positioning the loft hatch opening, make sure it is at least 1 metre away from the external wall
  • Check there will enough head room at the entry point

2. Measure your space thoroughly

Once you have determined the location for your loft hatch, it's time to measure up. Choosing the right size loft hatch depends on how much you use your loft space. As already mentioned, a standard size hatch is suitable for occasional use of the loft space, but if you need regular access to your loft space, you will need extra room for a bigger loft hatch. Access the space you have room for and make sure to use a level, tape measure, pencil and ruler to be precise.

3. Choose the type of loft hatch you want

Once you have established the location and room available in your in space, the next step is to choose the type of loft hatch you'd like. Options to consider include: the opening action (twist or slide), material, fire rated and insulated.
