An increasingly popular choice, Spacesaver stairs are an ideal solution where space is limited. Taking up about half the space of a standard flight, the unique tread shape overcomes the problem often associated with steep stairs, enabling comfortable descent facing forward with plenty of foot room. Although in use for many years, the alternating tread stair was actually included in the Building Regulations (Part K) in 1992. However, as with all stairs, it is advisable to confirm with the local Building Control Department their suitability for any given project.

The Bergen Spacesaver Stair Kits are typical DIY products ready to assemble and install into the smallest of locations.

QUARTER LANDING KIT
The 1/4 landing chart below is based on one example layout only, for a 13 tread Bergen. For other layouts the adjustments indicated below will be required.
- Use either of the left hand columns to find your floor height for the Bergen model chosen, eg. 14 tread 2850mm height.
- Read across for going (A) of upper flight (= 2020mm at 9 treads).
- If upper flight is not 9 treads as indicated, adjust the size A by using the right hand column, eg. if 7 treads A = 2020, deduct (2 x 120mm) = 1780mm upper going A.
- If upper going A has 7 treads, the lower going B must have 6 treads on a 14 tread Bergen (7 + landing + 6 = 14 treads).
- Lower going (B) on chart is 3 treads, at 1040mm. Add (3 x 120mm) for 6 treads = 1400mm lower going B.

Reduced Upper Going (A) of quarter landing
In addition to the saving obtained by notching the upper string the upper flight may be repositioned further on to the quarter landing if the pointed toe of the string is cut back vertically to the tread. This reduces the total going of the upper flight (A) by one more going (d ÷ 2)
All balustrading options comply with the 100mm gap rule, with the ranch rail having three horizontal rails not two as shown on the picture.
